ODOT closes Route 8 southbound to I-76 eastbound ramp: See detour

AKRON, Ohio – Akron motorists who travel from state Route 8 southbound to Interstate 76 eastbound should plan to allow more time for travel through late August.

ODOT closed the I-76 eastbound ramp on Monday night for bridge reconstruction, according to a Facebook post. The bridge reconstruction is part of the department’s $160 million Akron Beltway project.

Those needing to travel east from State Route 8 southbound should take the following detour: I-76 West to I-76 Kenmore Leg to I-277 East to I-77 North to I-76 East.

ODOT also announced that I-77 southbound to Archwood Avenue is closed through late July and the ramp from I-77 southbound to Waterloo Road is closed through late August.

Akron Beltway

Construction for the project started in 2021 and is expected to be completed by summer of 2025. Project highlights include:

  • Pavement replacement and addition of lanes on I-77 between U.S. 224 and state Route 8
  • Pavement replacement on I-76/I-77 from Princeton Avenue to the I-77/state Route 261 interchange
  • Pavement replacement on I-76, I-77 and state Route 8 at the Central Interchange
  • Resurfacing of state Route 8
  • The addition of a southbound lane on state Route 8 between Carroll Street and Beacon Street
  • The re-alignment of left-hand turn ramps (I-76 westbound to I-77 southbound and I-76 eastbound to state Route 8 northbound) to improve turn radius
