HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An 81-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle crash in the Kaimuki area on Wednesday.

It happened around 8:35 a.m. on Sierra Drive near Wilhemina Rise.

Officials said the driver was attempting to make a U-turn at the intersection of Sierra Drive and Wilhelmina Rise when he suddenly veered off the roadway and crashed into a rock wall.

He was found unresponsive on the scene and taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

According to HPD, the driver was wearing a seatbelt and may have been suffering a medical condition during the crash.

Speed, drug and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash, investigators said.

This is the 16th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 27 at the same time last year.

An investigation is ongoing.
