To bolster regional trade and economic integration within West Africa, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Trade Centre (ITC) have unveiled a pioneering online business matchmaking platform.

Developed under the West African Competitiveness Observatory and supported by the European Union, this platform addresses a longstanding challenge in the region: the need for robust business networks hindering effective trade relationships.

The platform, which has attracted over 200 businesses, is a vital conduit for West African enterprises to connect with potential buyers, suppliers, and partners across borders. By the end of 2024, the initiative aims to onboard 1,000 companies of all sizes and sectors, including service providers, fostering a dynamic ecosystem conducive to economic growth.

What sets this platform apart is its inclusivity and accessibility. It is free for businesses to join and operates in English, French, and Portuguese, reflecting the region’s linguistic diversity. Moreover, the platform leverages AI-based tools to enhance online branding and communication, ensuring seamless interaction among businesses with varying linguistic backgrounds.

To introduce businesses to the platform and maximize its utility, ECOWAS and ITC conducted a series of webinars. These sessions, conducted in multiple languages, provided:

  • Step-by-step guidance on creating profiles.
  • Utilizing AI tools for effective online presence.
  • Navigating the platform’s features for optimal business outcomes.

Massandjé Toure-Litse, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture at ECOWAS, emphasized the platform’s role in facilitating improved access to regional markets. She underscored its potential to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and strengthen collaboration among businesses across West Africa, fostering a sense of connection and community.

Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of ITC, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the platform’s importance in empowering businesses, especially smaller enterprises, to capitalize on regional trade opportunities. By fostering connections and partnerships, the platform aims to create a sense of engagement, drive sustainable economic development and enhance regional integration.

Businesses interested in exploring new opportunities and expanding their market reach within West Africa are encouraged to join the platform and start connecting today.

The launch of this business matchmaking platform marks a significant milestone in efforts to enhance economic cooperation and trade facilitation across West Africa. By bridging gaps in business networks and promoting cross-border collaboration, ECOWAS and ITC are paving the way for a more integrated and prosperous regional economy.
