Southern Arkansas University has announced that Cagen Knoles has been selected as the next Mulerider, the iconic mascot representing the university.

Knoles takes over the reins of the prestigious position from the former Mulerider and recent SAU graduate, Malli Dooly of Emerson.

Knoles, a senior agricultural education major from Paris, AR, has demonstrated exceptional school spirit, leadership, and dedication to SAU's values and traditions. He is involved on campus with the Mulerider Marshals, SAU FFA Alumni Chapter, Alpha Gamma Rho, and as a student worker on the SAU farm. His passion and love for SAU are evident through his daily involvement and work at SAU.

"I am honored and excited to be chosen as the next Mulerider," said Knoles. "As a Mulerider Marshal over the past year, I have developed a very close relationship with Molly Ann. Through this experience, I have become truly invested in the Mulerider."

"I look forward to connecting with students, alumni, and the community. The Mulerider represents the heart and soul of SAU, and I am eager to uphold its proud traditions."

The Mulerider tradition dates back to the early 1900s when SAU was known as the Third District Agricultural School. During this period, students and faculty frequently rode mules to navigate the rugged terrain of southwest Arkansas. The mule, a symbol of strength and perseverance, soon became integral to the school's identity.

In 1912, the term "Muleriders" was coined to describe the school's athletic teams. Over the decades, the Mulerider evolved from a practical mode of transportation to a cherished mascot, embodying the university's values and heritage.

As the new Mulerider, Knoles, along with the famous SAU mule Molly Ann, will participate in various university events, athletic games, and community engagements, bringing the Mulerider spirit to life. The tradition of selecting an individual to officially represent SAU as the Mulerider ensures that the legacy of the Mulerider remains vibrant and relevant for each new generation of SAU students.

"We are excited to welcome Cagen Knoles as our new Mulerider," said Roger Giles, vice president for Administration. "Cagen's enthusiasm, energy, and deep connection to SAU make him an ideal representative of our beloved Mulerider. We look forward to seeing him represent SAU with Molly Ann both on and off campus."

The selection process involved a rigorous evaluation of candidates' abilities to embody the Mulerider's qualities and their commitment to SAU's values. The university and the selection committee thank all participants for their interest and dedication throughout this process.

As SAU continues to grow and evolve, the Mulerider remains a steadfast symbol of the university's enduring commitment to excellence, community, and innovation. SAU invites the SAU family and community to welcome and support Knoles in his new role.
