Avoid Driving Over This Many Hours A Day While On A Road Trip, Per Samantha Brown

'It's not the destination, it's the journey.' That famous quote probably wasn't inspired by road trips, but it could have been. Road trips are the perfect way to make travel memories, from the unique rest stops to the road trip games that'll keep your family busy. However, it's possible to have too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to driving time. Just ask travel expert Samantha Brown.

Expert's Advice on Driving Duration

Brown shared her best road trip tips in an article on her website, and one of her most critical pieces of advice is to limit how long you spend on the road each day. She recommends limiting driving on a road trip to 2-3 hours a day, no more than 4 hours. Brown emphasizes that spending too much time driving can lead to fatigue and aches.

Safety Regulations and Driving Limits

Regulations for professional drivers go beyond Brown's recommendations. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), passenger-carrying drivers are limited to 10 hours of driving time after eight consecutive hours of rest. Extended driving hours are allowed in adverse conditions. AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz stresses that individual driving limits vary depending on the person's experience and comfort behind the wheel.

Choosing the Right Route

When planning a road trip, it's essential to consider the driving duration to ensure safety and an enjoyable experience. Brown advises travelers to choose a destination that is manageable within their time constraints. She suggests planning routes carefully to avoid feeling overwhelmed and fatigued. Flying to a distant location and renting a car can be a practical way to cut down on driving time while still enjoying a road trip adventure.
