A serious accident on Colorado's mountainous stretch of I-70 left two people dead and two people hospitalized on June 29, according to the Avon Police Department.

In an initial press release on the matter, the department reported that the accident involved two vehicles, taking place just east of the Avon 167 interchange in eastbound lanes of the interstate.

Reporting from Vail Daily provides additional information regarding what took place, noting that a vehicle that was stopped in the right-hand shoulder of eastbound lanes is believed to have moved right to left across the highway toward an emergency turnaround in the median, getting struck by a vehicle that was traveling in lanes that were crossed. Two 68-year-olds in the vehicle that reportedly cut across the lanes were both pronounced deceased on the scene of the wreck. A 29-year-old and 28-year-old in the other vehicle were transported to a hospital with moderate injuries, according to Vail Daily.

According to the Avon Police Department, their team was joined in their response to the scene by members of the Colorado State Patrol, Eagle River Fire, Eagle County Paramedics, and the Eagle County Sheriff's Office.

Avon Police expressed condolences to those impacted by the accident.
