Cosafa Cup: Namibia To Play Angola In Final

africatopsports.com 2024/10/5

Namibia will face Angola in Sunday’s COSAFA Cup 2024 final after both teams won their semi-finals at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday.

Angola advanced to the regional showcase competition’s first final since 2006, defeating the Comoros 2-1, and will look to hoist the trophy for the first time since their third victory in 2004.

They got off to a fantastic start against the Islanders, with Keliano giving them the lead inside three minutes, followed by Depu’s fourth goal of the game midway through the first half.

Comoros equalised late on when Ibroihim Youssouf, their all-time COSAFA Cup leading scorer, converted a penalty with seven minutes remaining, but it was insufficient.

The Comoros enjoyed more ball possession in the game, but they were less clinical in front of goal than Angola.

They will still have an opportunity to win their first COSAFA Cup bronze medal when they face Mozambique in the third-place play-off on Sunday, 12:00 CAT. Comoros’ previous best finish was quarterfinals in 2019.

Namibia needed custodian Kamaijanda Ndisiro, who made two saves in the shootout to give the Brave Warriors a 4-2 victory over Mozambique after a goalless draw under the lights at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Ndisiro saved penalties from Julio Carrelo and captain Dario Melo to keep the Warriors’ hopes of capturing only their second COSAFA Cup title alive, following their victory in 2015.

Muzeu Muzeu could have put Namibia ahead in open play from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute, but Armando Doutor stopped his shot in a thrilling semi-final.

Both of Sunday’s matches will be played at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
