The staff members and students of the faculty of law, University of Calabar, Cross River State on Monday protested against insecurity in the campus of the institution.

Led by Mike Otu, an Associate Professor of law who has been targeted twice, they marched with placards bearing different inscriptions first to the Chief Safety Officer and later the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Florence Banku Obi.

Otu narrated how he has escaped kidnapping twice and followed up with a petition to the institution and law enforcement agencies including the Police who already know the perpetrators but had not followed up in detail.

Otu lamented that he was been told by others to relax as others were not kidnapped on campus which he reported by saying he nearly fell victim but for the grace of passersby.

The students and other staff who said a colleague who had been kidnapped told them that the abductors had informed him that they have information about every staff member of the faculty, saying they are now scared of learning and working.

The new Faculty of law building is the nearest structure to the river which served as an entry and exit point for kidnappers who whisked away several members of staff living in the quarters of the institution, some 800 meters away.

The institution has witnessed serial kidnappings of her staff in recent years.

In April, gunmen abducted three medical students of the institution in a hotel near the institution and demanded for a ransom of 14 million Naira. They were released after days with no information regarding how much ransom was paid.

In June, the Acting Managing Director of the University of Calabar Microfinance Bank was kidnapped and later released. Also, there was no information regarding whether a ransom was paid.
