Three Prayer Points for Independence Day

answersingenesis.org 2024/10/5

Happy Independence Day! On this quintessential American holiday, you are likely grilling out with family (shrimp on the barbie?), attending a local parade, and preparing to watch a fireworks display (or set off one of your own). But as we celebrate and contemplate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, I thought I’d share with you some prayer points and encourage you to stop and spend time in prayer today for our nation—something we are commanded by God to do on a regular basis.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. (1 Timothy 2:1–2)

Here are just three specific items to pray for today:

  • The 2024 presidential election. Obviously, presidential elections always have major consequences for good or ill, depending on who is elected. This election is particularly divisive, even among Christians, so pray for not only the results but for wisdom for believers. Pray that Christians would vote in line with biblical principles, judging candidates against the ultimate standard—God’s Word.
  • Those held captive by their LGBTQ identities. Several “pride” events this June were particularly obscene (despite children being in attendance!)—I won’t even share what took place on public streets in San Francisco because it was R-rated, but needless to say these individuals need to be set free from their slavery to their own passions by God’s grace. Pray that he would open their eyes to the truth—the truth that will ultimately set them free. And pray for the children being exposed to such evil—pray God would protect their hearts, minds, and bodies.
  • Pray for your local leaders. We’re specifically commanded to pray for those in governmental positions, so whether they are good or evil, look up your local leaders and pray for them by name. Then consider sending them a note to let them know you are praying for them! God may use it to encourage or convict them.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful day today celebrating this nation. Despite the massive problems that continue to plague our country, we are blessed to live here and to enjoy the level of freedom that we do. Let’s thank God for it and strive to defend and protect what he has entrusted to us. And remember, God is in control: “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings” (Daniel 2:21).

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
