Making a movie can be very difficult, and Kevin Costner found that out the hard way while filming the 2016 historical drama, Hidden Figures. The actor recently revealed that while shooting the movie, he was being treated for kidney stones, and required a morphine drip throughout filming to handle the pain.

In an interview with People, the acclaimed movie star reflected on his experience working on Hidden Figures, and what he had to overcome to deliver his performance. Costner plays the head of NASA's Space Task Group, Al Harrison, a fictional composite character. Unfortunately for the acclaimed actor, Costner had to film most of his scenes in intense pain after developing kidney stones. "I've never worked drunk on a set. I've never worked high on a set, but I was on morphine the last two weeks that I worked on [Hidden Figures]," Costner said.

The Untouchables isn't Kevin Costner's most well-known film, but it's still a wonderful blend of the Western and crime genres.

Hidden Figures tells the story of three brilliant mathematicians (Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson) and their efforts to help astronaut John Glenn reach orbit, at the height of the Space Race. Costner starred alongside a tremendous cast that included Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons. The film was directed by Theodore Melfi, and the film was nominated for Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars.

Costner Had to Hide IV Bruising While Filming

While Costner gives a great performance in the movie, he explains that while dealing with the kidney stones, he "worked 10 days under an IV drip. I don't even know how. About three days of it I was normal and then something happened to me." Due to the bruising caused by the IV drip, Costner had to roll his sleeves down to mask it. He recalls that the experience was tremendously painful and said, "I wanted to cry, but there was everybody watching, so I didn't."

Costner has many memorable performances throughout his career, Al Harrison, being one such role. However, Costner is hoping to create magic once again with his new film, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1. Costner stars and directs the new western epic, and has put a large sum of his personal finances into the film. The vision is for a four-part film series, but early box office numbers may put a halt on future plans. The film only managed to bring in $11 million in its opening weekend, a rough number considering the $100 million budget needed to make the film.

Hidden Figures is available to stream on Disney+.
