Speaking at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized President Tinubu’s responsibility to set a positive trajectory for Nigeria’ s democracy over the next 25 years. “Let us build a Nigeria where every citizen can speak freely, where opportunities are abundant, and where the hope for a better future is a reality, “Jonathan implored. “We must not pass on a democracy defined by regional or religious politics to our children. The National Assembly should explore suitable models for our nation. We must address the root causes of ‘do or die’ politics as it hampers democratic consolidation.” Jonathan added, For the Vice President, we hope you enhance infrastructure, improve education quality, and provide better facilities. Over the next twenty-five years, you must develop a democracy that minimizes conflict. The numerous litigations following each election are. highly disruptive. To achieve a stable and enduring democracy, we need to reduce this practice. I believe you and President Bola Tinubu, who played a key role during the June 12 crisis, have the capacity to manage this process effectively, ” He further highlighted the pivotal role of political leaders in setting a commendable example, demonstrating that their positions are genuinely derived from the people’s choice. Jonathan stressed the importance of ensuring that democracy’ s benefits are accessible to all Nigerians, irrespective of their economic or social status. Jonathan also criticized the ostentatious displays of wealth by the children of political leaders, asserting that such behavior is not reflective of the democracy Nigerians desire. He expressed concern over the current trend where election winners accumulate all the resources, fostering resentment and undermining national unity. Hosting the event attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume among others, Jonathan emphasized the need to create a more inclusive democratic framework that strengthens community bonds. He noted that the winner-takes-all approach does not foster fairness in governance. “If a political party secures 30% of the votes in an election, whether at the national or sub-national level, it should receive proportional recognition, “Jonathan stated. He concluded by urging for political reforms that ensure all parties feel represented, thus promoting a more stable and peaceful political climate in Nigeria.
