In a proactive effort to combat the recent surge in vehicle-related crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and snatching incidents within Owerri Metropolis, the Imo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, held a crucial dialogue with members of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on July 2, 2024.
During a security awareness walk through several motor parks in Owerri, CP Danjuma emphasized the commitment of the Imo State Police Command to maintaining peace and stability. He stressed the importance of a strong partnership with the NURTW to identify and apprehend criminals operating around motor park areas.
The Commissioner called on NURTW executives to ensure that all commercial bus drivers register their vehicles with the Union and the Police Central Motor Registry. This measure aims to create a comprehensive database of commercial bus drivers in the state, aiding in crime prevention and detection. CP Danjuma also urged compliance with traffic rules and warned against the use of tinted windscreens for safety and security reasons.
Highlighting that security is a collective responsibility, CP Danjuma appealed to the public for cooperation in maintaining peace and security in Imo State.
In response, NURTW Chairman Hon. Samuel Udeh praised the Imo State Government and the Police Command for their proactive measures to eradicate crime. He assured the Commissioner of continued support and collaboration, particularly in crime-prone areas like Warehouse Roundabout and Douglas Road.
Pastor Frank Onwumere, the Senior Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Imo State on Motor Parks and Illegal Parking, reiterated Governor Hope Uzodinma’s commitment to providing maximum security and good governance. He called on the residents of Imo State to support the police and other security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities in their areas.
The Imo State Police Command’s engagement with the NURTW marks a significant step towards enhancing security and fostering a safer environment for all residents.
