The legendary Wayne Rooney of Manchester United has teamed up with Gary Neville for his first significant work since being fired by Birmingham City.

A big step forward in his post-playing career endeavours was declared by the former striker when he announced his partnership with Neville’s football podcast, The Overlap. Since its 2021 debut, the programme has quickly become a well-known voice in the football media, drawing viewers in with its incisive commentary and exclusive interviews. In addition to former United teammates Gary Neville and Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott, and Jamie Carragher, Rooney will become a member of an exclusive group of analysts who will contribute to the channel’s varied programming that airs on YouTube and podcasts.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Rooney wrote on X: “I’m excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast. I can’t wait to get started – head over and subscribe now!”

Rooney’s tenure as Birmingham City’s manager was beset by difficulties; after the team’s results collapsed under his direction, Tom Brady and the other boardroom executives decided to fire him after just 15 games. After John Eustace stepped down as manager, Birmingham City was in sixth position. Rooney failed to lead the team, winning just two games and eventually dropping them into the relegation zone. Rooney is adamant about looking into new managerial chances in spite of the obstacles in his managerial career. He has been trying his hand at punditry in the interim, appearing on a number of networks, such as BBC One, TNT Sports, and Sky Sports.

Rooney was forced to sit out from his scheduled debut on Match of the Day on BBC due to a back injury sustained during a family holiday.

He wrote: “Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

“Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future. Good luck to @GaryLineker and the guys for tonight’s show and see you soon.”

It is anticipated that Rooney’s extensive background will enhance the conversation on The Overlap about the beautiful game. He has made a reputation for himself by offering sharp commentary on a variety of situations. Virgil van Dijk was advised to “get on with it” when the defender complained that Liverpool wasn’t given frequent kickoffs at 12:30 pm. On another occasion, though, he took a jab at Marcus Rashford and said he didn’t feel sorry for the struggling United attacker.
