quicknews-africa.net 3 days ago

The group made the call in Abuja at a one-day Inter-Political Parties Symposium with the theme “Patriotism: A Panacea for National Development.’’

Sen. Ita Enang, Convener, Tinubu/Shettima Renaissance Group, spoke at the event.

He said that the country was faced with an economic challenge which did not discriminate among political parties.

Enang  urged Nigerians to come together in unity of purpose to tackle the economic challenges facing the country.

“To have a more confident Electoral Commission, we should have representatives of political parties in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as national commissioners,’’ he said.

Dr Rufus Ebegba, former Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), said that the current democratic system in the country was not working and advised that a new democratic structure be in place.

He assured that a new democratic system would accommodate the youths and equally permit every Nigerian to have a say in the development of the country.

Ebegba urged every youth to imbibe the spirit of patriotism noting that the country’s legislative system should be reduced at the national parliament.

He advised that every citizen must have the power to recall the leaders that they had elected into power for accountability.

Mr Chris Wayas, Chairman, Queen Amina Support Initiative (QASI), urged everyone to put the country first over personal gains.

“We should ask our counselors, commissioners what they have done with the mandates given to them,’’ he said.

Similarly,  Chike Erokwu, board member of QASI, also urged the youths to work together for a better Nigeria and promised to support any party that wanted to run for any elected office anywhere in the country.

“We are here to work out one Nigeria, regardless of the party; we want a better Nigeria and that, can only start from the youths,’’ he said.

Mr Ahmed Buhari, an African Union Ambassador, also discouraged every form of discrimination to  access the dividends of democracy so as to foster unity and development in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that QASI is a non-for-profit grassroots organisation with the core vision of promoting inter party unity in Nigeria. (NAN
