Rivers crisis: Rowdy session as PDP Reps hold closed-door meeting

Tension is currently mounting within the ranks and files of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives, who are currently holding a closed meeting over the lingering crisis trailing the grand plan to adopt Umar Damagun as the substantive National Chairman of the party during the forthcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The Nigerian Tribune authoritatively gathered that the Caucus meeting was convened to adopt Damagun ahead of the NEC meeting, a situation which G-60 members led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere vehemently opposed.

In attendance at the enlarged meeting held in Conference Room 414 New Building, House of Representatives Wing, are all the PDP members, including members of the G60.

The Caucus Leader, Hon. Chinda, is presiding over the meeting, which started at about 11:20 am.

Our Correspondent, who is currently monitoring the proceedings, observed that at 12:04 pm, Hon. Ugochinyere stood up to voice his opposition against a statement made by the Caucus Leader.

However, some PDP lawmakers tried to calm nerves as the meeting continues.

Recall that members of the G60 led by Hon. Ugochinyere had, during a press briefing, threatened to quit the party over allegations that the acting PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, planned to hand over the party structures to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Barely 24 hours later, the Minority Caucus Leaders, Hon. Kingsley Chinda (Caucus Leader); Hon. Ali Madaki (Deputy leader); Hon. Ali Isah (Minority Whip); and Hon. George Ozodinobi (Deputy Minority Whip), via a statement, disowned Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and 59 opposition lawmakers, stating that such a body is unknown to the parliament.
