Almost 150 pupils take part in mining games
Almost 150 school pupils recently participated in the Cornwall School Mining Games, a captivating event designed to inspire and encourage students to explore the fields of engineering and Earth sciences. This annual event saw eleven schools competing in various disciplines, such as panning, surveying, mineral separation, and hand steeling.
Coordinator Rebecca Mitchell expressed, "There are abundant opportunities on the horizon for Cornish youngsters. We're gearing up to open mines, venture into lithium mining, and delve into engineering for offshore windfarms."
Opportunities for Young Minds
On the fifth year of the games, 146 pupils engaged in this thrilling experience at the King Edward Mine Museum, close to Camborne, also the venue for the upcoming International Mining Games in 2025.
Empowering Students for Global Careers
Florence Hawksworth, Head of Geography at Helston Community College, highlighted that the games provide students with a gateway to explore career prospects locally and internationally. Hawksworth emphasized the significance of understanding local resources like lithium and geothermal energy, recognizing the potential for students to make a global impact with their knowledge.

This year's games concluded with a shared victory for Truro and Redruth schools, who jointly lifted the prestigious Kurt Jackson mining trophy, symbolizing their outstanding performance and teamwork.
