Police confirm killing of Ex-SUG President in Rivers community

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a former President of the Student Union Government, in Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, in Port Harcourt, Endwell Awunze
The Command’s Spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko who confirmed the incident to journalists when contacted, said Mr Endwell was killed by unknown gunmen in Ahoada area of the State.
Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police said investigation into his killing is currently ongoing.
Daily Champion gathered that Endwell Awunze, who was suspected to be a whistleblower against cultism and other crime related activities in Okporowo community in Ahoada East LGA was killed last night along Ula-Upata town in the area, in the midst of the political crisis in the State.
A community source revealed that Mr. Awunze was trailed by his suspected killers after he left the Ahoada East Council Secretariat, where they were protesting against tenure elongation of Local Government Chairman and boarded a motorcycle at about 7:00pm yesterday, 18th June 2024.
The source disclosed that as the motorcycle carrying Awunze was navigating along Ula-Pata road, three gunmen who had already laid ambush opened fire on him and he died instantly while the driver of the motorcyclist sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Reacting to the incident, National Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Comrade Prince Wiro, expressed worries over the negative effects the political crisis rocking Rivers State will have on the residents.
Wiro said that cultists and other criminal elements may take advantage of the chaotic situation in the state to perpetrate evil.
He urged political gladiators in the state to carry out their activities within the confines of the law, as information has it that some mischievous politicians are recruiting all manner of violent personalities to achieve their aim.
He called on the Police and other security agencies in the state to double their effort to arrest the security challenges that may arise as a result of the political crisis.
