Prince of Wales Bridge

Timings for essential repairs on the Prince of Wales Bridge have changed, with disruption and closures expected. National Highways workers need to re-waterproof and resurface a one-kilometre stretch of the cable-stayed bridge to extend the life of the road surface.

The road maintenance body had originally shared some details and timings of the work, but they have since revised the overnight closures and works. As a result, the eastbound and westbound carriageways on the Prince of Wales bridge will be reduced to one lane between 9pm and 6am overnight between Monday, July 8 and Friday, July 12.

The M4 bridge will be closed westbound overnight between on Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16. When the road opens on Wednesday, July 17, the westbound carriageway will be reduced to two lanes.

The eastbound carriageway will be fully closed between 9pm and 6am on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18.. When the road opens on Friday, July 19, the eastbound carriageway will be reduced to two lanes.

The Prince of Wales Bridge's westbound route will be fully closed between 10pm and 6am on Saturday, July 20. The eastbound carriageway will also be closed at junction 22 between 9pm and 6am. Traffic will be diverted off via the exit slip and motorists should use the roundabout to rejoin.

The westbound carriageway will be fully closed between 10pm and 6am on Saturday, July 27. The eastbound carriageway will also be closed at junction 22 between 9pm and 6am – traffic will be diverted off via the exit slip and use the roundabout to rejoin.

During the full closures, a diversion will be in place via the M48 – please follow the ‘bridge’ symbol. There will be a contraflow and a reduced speed limit on the bridge from 6am on Sunday, July 28. Two lanes will be open in each direction.

A spokesman for National Highways said: "We’ll need some overnight closures as our work progresses to allow us to move the contraflow, ensuring we can carry out work across the full width of the carriageway. We’re resurfacing and carrying out concrete repairs on the Prince of Wales Bridge that carries the M4 over the Severn Estuary.

"We’ll start with some overnight closures in July for preparation work and to set up the contraflow. The contraflow will then be in place until our work is finished. This is currently expected to be at the end of autumn, but we’ll be doing everything we can to get the work done as quickly as possible.

"Doing this work in the summer reduces the risk of the M48 bridge being closed due to weather, providing an alternative route for anyone crossing the river."

The M48 Severn Bridge should remain open at all times during the Prince of Wales Bridge closure, with drivers advised to use this as a diversion route.
