German referee Felix Zwayer has been appointed to officiate England’s Euro 2024 semi-final match against the Netherlands.

This has not gone down well with many in the England camp, especially Jude Bellingham who has history with the referee.

Zwayer, known for his involvement in a match fixing scandal in the past, was selected by UEFA to officiate a crucial fixture between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Dortmund lost the game due to a controversial penalty decision by Zwayer.

Bellingham brought up the match fixing story during a post-match interview “It hits him and I don’t even think he’s looking at the ball but you know you can look at a lot of the decisions in the game. You give a referee that has match-fixed before, the biggest game in Germany what do you expect?” These remarks resulted in a £34,000 fine by the German FA.

Despite the controversy, UEFA defended their decision, citing Zwayer’s status as one of their top officials.

They emphasized his competence and experience as the primary reasons for his appointment to such a high-profile match.
