CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland man is accused of carjacking a woman in the heart of city’s Tremont neighborhood and leading police on a pair of chases before he was arrested.

Quiintin Mathews, 18, appeared in Cleveland Municipal Court on Friday on aggravated robbery charges. A judge issued a $40,000 bond. Police say that more charges are forthcoming.

At about 11 p.m. June 15, a 25-year-old woman was sitting in her 2024 Honda Civic at the northeast corner of Lincoln Park, when Mathews and another man emerged from an SUV with tinted windows and approached her on either side, authorities say.

Mathews carried a gun, demanded keys and told her to hurry up and get out, a police report stated. She asked if she could first remove her house key, and he said no, she told police.

The assailants debated for a moment over who should drive, then fled in the Civic, which carried the victim’s wallet, authorities say.

An hour later, police tracked the car driving northbound on Fulton Parkway. It carried four passengers and its license plate had been tampered with, according to a report. Officers activated their lights and pursued the Civic as it entered Interstate 71, speeding toward downtown Cleveland. They lost sight of the car as it rounded Dead Man’s Curve, the report said.

Two hours after that, a second armed robbery occurred, and police are treating Mathews as a suspect. This time, two female pedestrians were approached by six suspects wearing ski masks outside a hotel on the East Bank of the Flats. The suspects had arrived in a Honda Civic with no license plate, police reported. Two men pointed guns at the victims, authorities say.

One assailant grabbed one of the victim’s purses, and when she resisted, he pistol-whipped her, police say. The other woman was also pistol-whipped, she told officers.

Later that morning, Mathews posted an Instagram message indicating that he’d been driving around in the Civic, police say. In addition, the victim of the Tremont carjacking identified Mathews in a photo lineup, according to prosecutors.

Mathews was arrested Wednesday. Another suspect in the Tremont carjacking, Emon’Te Marks of Cleveland, has been charged with aggravated robbery in Cleveland Municipal Court. The 18-year-old remains at large. Police records indicated there are four female suspects linked to the case, including a 12- and 13-year-old.

Mathews is a suspect in a third armed robbery that occurred June 15, police said in court filings. He admitted to investigators that he was part of the fleeing car on I-71 following the Tremont incident and that he was involved in at least two other police chases in the days before and after, police said.
