Shower screens quickly become cloudy due to a build-up of soap and stains on the glass which can be tricky to clean if you do not have the right products. 

The main cause of glass marks is hard water stains, which is when minerals in hot water dry on a surface and leave behind stains which are cloudy, hazy or streaky.

Hard water stains also prevent soap from being able to dissolve completely which can cause a build-up and make shower glass difficult to clean no matter how much you wipe away at it. 

Luckily, Jamie Tarence, a cleaning expert and founder of Family Savvy, has shared there is a simple homemade remedy to clean a glass shower screen using only washing up liquid and vinegar. 

Jamie said: “This Dawn [dish soap] and vinegar solution simply cannot be beaten when it comes to cleaning glass shower doors! This formula works miracles and is so much more efficient than your typical glass cleaner.”

She added: “With only two ingredients, you will get a shower cleaner that gets the job done without using harsh chemicals or bleach products.”

It may seem strange, but vinegar is mildly acidic which means it can dissolve the minerals in hard water stains such as calcium and magnesium to make them easier to wipe away. 

Jamie said: “Vinegar is extremely effective as a cleaner, besides just removing residue, vinegar is also pretty effective in killing mould. 

“Bleach does this as well, but vinegar is a much safer alternative while being just as effective. Vinegar is a great solution for a mildewy shower.” 

Dish soap also contains surfactants, which are designed to be able to easily generate grime, grease and oils which make it the perfect solution to wash away soap buildup. 

How to clean a shower door with a natural homemade solution 

You will need:

• Dish soap
• White vinegar
• Empty clear spray bottle 
• Funnel 
• Washcloth
• Squeegee 
  

Method

Mix equal parts vinegar and dish soap together and then heat the solution in a microwave for two minutes. Stir well and pour it into an empty spray bottle with a funnel while it is hot. 

Heating up the solution increases the vinegar’s ability to dissolve mineral deposits as warm solutions tend to react faster, so you will be able to clean your shower glass much more quickly.

Once you have your solution, spray the homemade remedy liberally shower glass and leave it for at least five minutes. 

You can leave the solution to break down the stains while you take a shower. 

Jamie said: “I toss an extra washcloth or hand towel into the shower with me when I plan to wash the shower doors. By the time the Dawn and  Vinegar solution has worked its magic, my cloth is wet and ready to go!”

When the time is up, wipe the shower doors with a washcloth and rinse the glass with warm water. 

Your shower screen should be sparkling clean, but to make sure it is completely clear wipe it down with a squeegee afterwards. 

Jamie said: “If you don’t wipe the doors with a squeegee, they will still be clean, but they won’t dry as crystal clear.”
