Since its inception in fall 2023, Smiles of Faith has been making waves in Tulsa as the city's first free, mobile dental clinic. The clinic has been dedicated to offering essential dental services to underserved communities in north Tulsa, completely free of charge.
Uniting Communities for a Common Cause
Smiles of Faith was born out of a collaborative effort between members of several churches including Centenary United Methodist, Boston Avenue United Methodist, Metropolitan Baptist, Morningstar Baptist, and Vernon African Methodist Episcopal. The group came together to address the crucial need for accessible dental care in the community, ultimately deciding to launch the mobile clinic in early 2020.
A Beacon of Hope in Tulsa
Meredith Davison, Ph.D., the chair of fundraising at Smiles of Faith, has been a driving force behind the initiative since its inception. With a background in public health, Davison recognized the lack of focus on dental care within free clinics in the Tulsa area, prompting the creation of Smiles of Faith to bridge this gap.
Making a Difference, One Smile at a Time
Dr. Jessica McGhee, the Executive Director of Smiles of Faith, emphasizes the clinic's mission to cater to diverse populations, ranging from seniors to individuals in vulnerable situations such as the unsheltered and those reintegrating from prison. The clinic's dedicated staff offer services such as fillings, extractions, cleanings, and even spiritual support, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
A Testament to Compassionate Care
Operating from Tuesday to Thursday, the vibrant mobile clinic travels between four churches, offering essential dental services with a compassionate touch. The clinic's staff, including a dentist, dental assistant, hygienist, volunteer translators, and a supportive board of directors, prioritize patient needs above all else, striving to provide a comfortable and positive experience for every individual.
Looking Towards the Future
As a 501(c)(3) organization, Smiles of Faith has already completed over 1,100 procedures since its establishment. With plans to expand services to five days a week and establish a permanent location, the clinic remains committed to serving the community and ensuring that every patient receives the care they deserve.
