Refurbished Ironwood 885

diningandcooking.com 2 days ago

Hello everyone! I was given this Ironwood 885 for free from a friend. They said it had a major grease fire and they would rather buy a new one than try to clean this one out so I decided to tackle the project of getting it cleaned out and refurbished.

In all It took me 8 hours to disassemble, scrub, and wash off all of the fire extinguisher residue that was left over. I had so much fun taking it apart and cleaning it off.

I used a combination of scrubbing pads, soap and a pressure washer to get it all nice and tidy. The best part was it actually fired up and worked! The auger moves perfectly, the WiFi works, the pellet level sensor works and so does the display.

I’m going to replace the temperature sensor in it for good measure and most likely I will replace the drip tray due to it looking like crap.

I did have to paint a ton of spots in the back we’re all the paint melted off due to the fire. Nothing a little semi-gloss high heat paint couldn’t fix. I decided that I didn’t want to sand everything down and respray the whole thing so instead I sanded down the rust spots and painted over them. You can tell up close what is not original paint but it’s mostly in the back so it’s not a big deal.

I will also need to weld the back right corner frame back into place. The fire got so hot that it popped the welds right off. It doesn’t need to be welded on as the grate still fits and functions properly. The weld would be more for looks than anything.

I am missing the top grate that needs to be replaced. And the oil catch can. I will be buying a few more accessories that I’m currently eyeballing. I might even get new grates and a griddle. Since I got the grill for free I can definitely stock up on unnecessary accessories.

Best part was my neighbor telling me all his tips and tricks for using it. He was so hyped to tell me what accessories were a must, temperatures to cook at, and even showed me how to turn it off and on and how to prime the auger.

In all I had an absolute blast tearing this thing down and getting it ready for Friday when it makes its debut. I’m going to try some hamburgers that I saw in the app. Then on Sunday I’m going to do a rack of ribs and see how it goes.
