Ukraine Security Service foils alleged coup attempt in Kyiv, arrests ‘plotters’

The Ukraine Security Service (SBU) announced on Monday that it had thwarted an alleged plot to occupy the country’s parliament and oust the current government. The SBU’s statement claimed that a group posing as “public activists” was planning a series of provocations in Kyiv on June 30.

The security agency accused the group, reportedly led by the co-founder of a public organization with a history of anti-Ukrainian activities since 2015, of intending to destabilize Ukraine in favor of the Russian Federation.

“Under the guise of holding a so-called ‘party’, the attackers planned to announce the ‘removal from power’ of the current military and political leadership of Ukraine,” the SBU’s statement read.

“Then they hoped to seize the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and block its work.”

The SBU alleged that the organizers aimed to attract a crowd by arranging a seemingly peaceful meeting in the center of Kyiv, intending to use unsuspecting participants to further their provocative actions.

“The perpetrators planned to spread information about the ‘disturbances’ in Kyiv through domestic and foreign information resources,” the statement added.

During the raids, the SBU reported discovering a cache of ammunition, including assault rifles, sniper rifles, handguns, laptops, mobile phones, and “draft records with evidence of criminal activities.”

This incident follows a similar claim by Ukraine in May, where the government said it had foiled a Russia-backed plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other high-ranking officials.

Two colonels from Ukraine’s government protection unit were arrested in connection with that plot.
