Kenyan coast in a boat, Sawtooth Moutains, and The Bear in the Dolomites

Good day, inmates and visitors! Here is week 25 of ADVrider’s Photos of the Week, and we start with a wet one. The 2009 KTM 990 ADV in this shot was having fun at the hands of @Corneel B in Wales. Our contributor says this “water shot” was taken during a May tour of Wales, “mainly following the TET . . . in the infamous Strata Florida section which has numerous water crossings really on the edge of what is doable.” Corneel B follows this one with a “bit open shot” that was taken near Snowdonia National Park, and . . .

“The shot with the small road between the rock walls is on an old Roman road that seemingly has received NO maintenance since. Stunning road and quite difficult at moments.” We’re linking a (slightly) bigger version of this one for your visual convenience.

Al in all a superb weekend though overshadowed by the mechanical problem of a friend who had joined us on the 2nd day for maybe 70 km to notice that his cluch was spent.

More from Caribou Chilcotin

Which is in Canada’s western province of British Columbia and was featured in a previous post by @DonBrom, who was riding a 2016 Kawasaki KLR and staying out of the danger zone around logging trucks on his way to Granisle on Babine Lake when this shot was taken.

Next, he “decided to cut the corner south of Vanderhoof to Quesnel,” which took him”to a misty camp near Noralee followed by an atmospheric morning ride along the shore of Francois Lake.”

“I then rode the Telegraph Trail Road into the Blackwater area where I had another great camp, this time at Naltesby Lake.”

I highly recommend exploring this area as the highway run from Quesnel through Prince George and on to Houston can be a bit ho-hum after riding it a few times. Happy adventuring.

Into Africa

Here’s a shot from @pettefar, who says the 2022 Kibo 250 in this photo was on a boat to Lamu Island off the coast of Kenya. “Much fun was had arranging the manpower at each end to lift the bike up and down steep stone steps to and from the warm sea. The Tama River had broken the main road to Lamu port so the bike was already a freshwater sailor, now getting its sea legs (wheels?). Only motorbikes are allowed on the island as the roads or tracks are mostly quite narrow.

“The Kibos are available for $30 a day from AMT in Nairobi or Mombosa. I rented this one for 25 days and covered 4000+ km across Kenya including off-roading around Lake Turkana in the north and around Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.” Hmm, makes you think, doesn’t it? You could do that!

Speaking of Africa

. . . here’s one of its Twins, born in 2016 at the Honda factory and currently (as of this pic) in Utah, USA. Contributor @ibebp says this shot was “taken along Valley of the Gods road in southern Utah” when he “was on a solo trip exploring Utah about three weeks ago.”

The charms of California

Here are some photos submitted by @Racerx577 who was long on pictures and short on words, but that’s okay, we’re glad to have these shots from an exploration of the trails in the Green Valley Lake area in the San Bernardino Mountains of California, taken a few months ago while he was riding a 2023 Honda XR150.

Obviously, this is not him, nor a Honda XR150.

We don’t know waht to say about the photo above, but below is an obliging rattlesnake, getting out of the way for the rider.

No idea . . . but they look happy, and probably were , 30 years ago when the photo was taken, judging by the motorcycles and helmets.

And, of course, there’s always a smile after the ride to brighten your day.

No doldrums in the Dolomites

Here are some shots from @The Bear, who was enjoying riding in Dolomites region of Italy with Edelweiss a couple of weeks ago. “The big bloke on the BMW is our guide, Harald.” The Bear was riding a 2024 Yamaha T7 and “enjoying it enormously,” but it’s not shown in these pictures.

“Riding the Harley is Alex, who is my nomination for European bagger racing He could push that baby!”

“The rather wooden-looking ‘machine’ is a Feuerstuhl or Fire Chair, for obvious reasons.”

And, the final shot “gives an idea of the scenery,” though The Bear doesn’t know who the bloke is or what he’s riding.

Tire warmer

Here are some shots from @ScottFree, whose took them on “a trip to Wisconsin and Iowa a couple weeks ago, whose primary purpose was to wear out my tires. In this it was fully successful.” He says he camped at Potosi, Wisconsin, “on the banks of the Mississippi River, hence the nice sunset panorama.” He didn’t photograph the bike (a 2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan) “as I didn’t want to get in trouble with the US Army.”

Below, he’s on a section of the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail.

The other three are from the sections of the TWAT that are in Iowa. Go ˡgure. The Fire Tower is the only one in the state, which made it worth a visit. Donahue Road had some nice scenery, and Red Oak Road demonstrates how cropping out a farmhouse can make it look like I’m all by myself on a sinuous curvy road in the middle of nowhere.

Fun in Idaho

Here’s a shot of a 2013 BMW R1200RT submitted by @HoraceWill, who took a “375 mile day ride from Boise through the mountains to Stanley and Ketchum” in the Sun Valley area a few days ago. “This shot is of the Sawtooth Mountains just outside of Stanley, Idaho.”

“Great loop ride, plenty of curvy river roads and mountain passes, and very little traffic.”

Nice campsite, but . . .

Here’s something from @YodaJediMaster, who was on an annual trek from New Mexico to Spearfish, South Dakota, a couple of weeks ago on his 2021 Suzuki DL650 XT Adventure “for the Honda NT700/ST1300 gathering.” He camped overnight in the “tiny northern burg of Cowdry, Colorado,” and the beautiful sunset gave no hint of the night ahead, he says.

Only hours later, the wind developed into a howling fury attempting to destroy my Marmot Fortress 4 season tent. Fortunately, the tent and I survived intact. But, the next day dawned clear and calm at 33 degrees F. A cold one-hour ride to Laramie, Wyoming, found a respite of hot food and coffee.

Beautiful Arizona

Here are two shots to finish up this week’s POTW from @Cocoozuna, taken on a “break-in ride on the Arizona BDR.” The first image is from the first night on the trail between Stages 1 and 2. “A well-earned sleep because we rode from San Diego to the trailhead and kept on riding.”

And here is a shot taken at the beginning of Day 3, “along the rim.” Nice country!

And that’s it, folks. Many thanks to our contributors for this week’s images, and please remember, ig you have shots, send them in! Just click the orange link, it’s right here! And see you next week!
