During the government of national unity coalition talks, the DA said it would like directors-general reporting to DA ministers to be selected by the party.

On Monday, the commission released the Quarterly Bulletin for the first quarter of the year, which covers January 1 to March 31, 2024.

The report focused on the implications of the general election for the public service.

PSC Commissioner Anele Gxoyiya called on public servants to be non-partisan when executing their duties.

"Directors-general are directors general of the public service and not directors-general of certain ministers. We would understand that there might have been mistakes in the past,

"Where there would be those conflicts that lead to directors general being removed, but what we are saying as the public service commission is that in the context of building a capable and a developmental state, we need a professional public service that is insulated from politics.

"We need a cadre of public servants who are prepared and ready to serve anyone who gets elected in office, irrespective of political affiliation."

The commission called on public servants in all government departments to support the new cabinet, which, for the first time in history, includes ten different political parties.

"Furthermore, public servants are expected to serve and support the newly elected cabinet and leadership in government in a dedicated, competent and professional manner and help them execute the policies that are a priority to the government."
