Donald Trump Rally Provides Potential Running Mate Clue

Newsweek 2 days ago

Speculation has risen that Donald Trump might confirm Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his 2024 running mate at an upcoming rally in Doral.

Trump's campaign said on Wednesday that on July 9, the former president would attend a rally in the Florida city, which is close to Rubio's hometown of Miami. Rubio has long been considered a front-runner to be Trump's next potential vice president.

The former president's rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club is also scheduled to take place just under a week from the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump is expected to be confirmed as the GOP's 2024 presidential nominee.

Trump's team has downplayed suggestions that the former president will announce a running mate at the July 9 rally, CNN reported.

Brian Hughes, Trump's spokesperson, told the outlet: "As President Trump has said himself, the top criteria in selecting a Vice President is a strong leader who will make a great President for eight years after his next four-year term concludes. But anyone telling you they know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless that person is named Donald J. Trump."

Still, political commentators have speculated about the significance, if any, of the rally's location.

James Oliphant, a national political correspondent for Reuters, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Trump will hold a rally in Doral, FLA on July 9 in basically Marco Rubio's backyard. Does that mean Rubio is the VP pick? It seems to me that it's never that straightforward."

"The Trump VP announcement is rumored to be in Miami. Could it mean that he's picking Rubio? Maybe, but that's far from definitive," Red Eagle Politics, a pro-Trump political YouTuber, wrote on X.

In an article asking whether Trump's Doral rally meant Rubio would be confirmed as the former president's 2024 running mate, the Miami Herald cited two unnamed sources, said to be familiar with Trump's plans, who said he wasn't expected to announce his vice presidential pick at the July 9 event.

Other names thought to be on Trump's shortlist for his vice president are South Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, and Florida Representative Byron Donalds.

Newsweek has contacted Trump's and Rubio's offices for comment via email.

One issue for Rubio, should he be selected as Trump's vice president, is that the Constitution makes it tricky for a president and vice president to live in the same state. This means that if the rumors are true, either Trump or Rubio would have to change where they are registered to vote if they want to appear on the same ticket.

After the presidential debate on June 27—where President Joe Biden delivered a performance that some Democrats fear has damaged his reelection hopes—CNN asked Rubio if he would be willing to move if selected as Trump's running mate.

"That would be presumptuous of me to talk about that," he said. "The job has not been offered to me. I am not the vice presidential choice. No one is right now. And we'll cross bridges when we get to them."

Sanford Levinson, a constitutional scholar at the University of Texas School of Law, previously told the Associated Press it is "just easier" to run candidates from two different states. He added: "It does seem to be easy to evade any problems if you want to."
