Ogueri has narrowly escaped death twice, SaharaReporters was told.

Njoku Gregory Ogueri, a rights activist and Labour Party chieftain, has raised the alarm over threats to his life and the lives of his family members.

Ogueri has narrowly escaped death twice, SaharaReporters was told.

The attacks were reportedly carried out by gunmen in military uniform.

On January 23, 2023, he was reportedly ambushed by armed men in military uniform while returning from his country home in Ejemekwuru, Imo State.

He managed to escape and fled into the forest, but not before sustaining serious injuries, including a nearly severed leg.

In a second incident in May, gunmen raided his home, firing shots and causing damage to the building.

Ogueri, known for his opposition to special military operations in the Southeast Nigeria, has gone into hiding with his family and is seeking help.

In an interview he granted from his hideout, Ogueri said the threats on his life had taken a terrifying turn.

He said, "My life and the lives of my immediate family members are no longer safe. I am currently at a loss as to how to handle the continued threat. We have been running from one place to another, I don't know how long this will continue."

When asked if he knows why gunmen are after him and his family members, Ogueri disclosed that his stands on certain government policies, especially regarding military operations in the Southeast region, could have offended the 'powers that be'.

He said, "As a member of an opposition political party and a conscientious Nigerian, I have vehemently criticised policies I considered repressive, especially in the Southeast, where hundreds of young people have been killed extrajudicially."

When reached for comment, the Imo State Police Command said it had not received any official complaint on the recent attack on Ogueri's residence.

The command's spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, however, assured that the command "is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of all law-abiding citizens and their properties".
