The Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, responded to concerns of competitors that he had monopolised the Nigerian market in a 2011 interview that has recently surfaced.

When asked by the host whether indeed he had taken over the Nigerian market, leaving absolutely no room for growth for his competitors, the industrialist stated that his company has invested heavily in their businesses because they believe in the country. That was what had set them apart.

According to him, the market is a fair playing ground, and the laws that applies to the operation of his business is the same law that applies to other businesses.

Dangote said: "Dangote does not really have any monopoly. The difference is that we are a company that actually believes in Nigeria.

"And because we believe in Nigeria, we always go out there to invest heavily, whereas other people are watching.

"We know that now it will get to a certain point where people will start screaming about monopoly. There's nothing like monopoly because there is nothing that we do, that we are the only one doing that product.

"Be it cement, be it flour, be in anything. And the laws are the same. Government will always bring regulations that will affect either Dangote or any other competitor of Dangote."

He added: "If you invest, it's a fair playing ground."
