Eleven suspects arrested and three vehicles recovered

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members arrested 11 suspects and recovered three motor vehicles between June 25 and July 1.

Officers followed up information on Tuesday at around 20:00 at a convenience shop in Duvenhage Street, Edleen.

A 48-year-old suspect was arrested when the officers found 69 cartons of illicit cigarettes in the store.

They arrested six suspects for possession of drugs at Ivory Park Ext 2, N12 Highway and Newlands Avenue, Benoni.

The officers recovered Nyaope, crystal methamphetamine, dagga and magic mushrooms in these separate incidents.

Officers also responded to a complaint of an attempted hijacking on Pretoria Road, Boksburg.

On arrival, they found that security personnel apprehended a 33-year-old suspect when he allegedly attempted to hijack a vehicle. BFS members took over the scene for the processing and detention of the suspect.

On June 28, at around 14:00, BFS members received information from security personnel about a white Audi Q5 in Benoni with suspects wanted for house burglaries and vehicle theft.

The vehicle was spotted on 7th Street, Northmead, by joint forces, and a chase ensued.

Three suspects were arrested in the Q5 when they caused an accident on Voortrekker Road over the N12 highway, just before Benoni CBD.

Inside the vehicle, the officers recovered numerous household goods taken in a house burglary in Leads Street, Rynfield.

Among the items were laptops, a computer monitor, a leaf blower and a video recorder. They also recovered a crowbar, wrench, spanner, hammer and two pick heads used as house break-in tools.

Further investigation revealed the Q5 was reported robbed on a Fairlands case in May 2024.

In further policing, BFS officers recovered two abandoned robbed vehicles – a white Toyota Fortuner found in Kempston Avenue, Benoni reported on a KwaThema case and a white Hyundai Accent at a field in Crystal Park reported on a Crystal Park case.

Investigations continue into all cases.

The suspects will appear in the local Magistrate’s Courts facing charges of possession of illicit cigarettes, possession of drugs, attempted hijacking, pointing of a firearm, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, possession of house break-in tools and possession of stolen goods.
