In a resolute response to the reported mass exodus of prominent members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), has vowed to fiercely oppose any bid by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to transform Nigeria into a one-party state.

Senator Wabara’s declaration comes in the wake of the departure of key PDP figures, notably former Governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, citing unresolved internal disputes within the party. Following Ihedioha’s exit, a cascade of resignations ensued, including high-ranking officials and members from Imo State, among whom were BoT member Chief Chris Okewulonu, four zonal officers, three state officers, and a local government chairman.

Expressing concern over the alleged role of certain elements within the PDP collaborating with the APC to destabilize the party, Senator Wabara asserted that the BoT, as the moral compass of the PDP, would intervene swiftly to stem further defections and thwart any efforts to dismantle the party.

“The BoT will swiftly intervene to prevent the orchestrated demise of our esteemed party, the People’s Democratic Party,” Senator Wabara affirmed. “With its cadre of distinguished individuals possessing vast experience and unwavering integrity, the BoT will salvage the party as it has done before, regardless of the consequences.”

He further emphasized the BoT’s commitment to upholding democracy and preventing the APC from monopolizing power, declaring, “The BoT will never permit the APC to exploit certain individuals within the PDP to convert Nigeria into a one-party state.”

Senator Wabara expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to overcome internal challenges, citing the party’s roster of seasoned politicians capable of resolving grievances and fostering unity. He reassured that impending internal conflicts would be resolved amicably.

Prior to the recent developments, Senator Wabara had conveyed optimism during the PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, asserting that predictions of the party’s collapse would be proven wrong.

Analysts attribute the turmoil within the PDP to a power struggle between potential presidential aspirants for the 2023 elections, specifically Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.
