Syracuse, N.Y. — A fire started by an electrical malfunction badly damaged and displaced five people from a South Side home Saturday night, firefighters said.

When firefighters at 331 Primrose Ave. at 11:58 p.m., they saw heavy smoke was coming from the attic windows, said Capt. Matt Craner, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department.

People inside the two-story home were evacuating when firefighters got there, he said.

Firefighters determined the fire had started in the attic. They stretched hoses into the home to extinguish the fire as other firefighters searched for people inside, he said. No one was found and the fire was out in 40 minutes, he said.

Syracuse fire Investigators confirmed the fire was started by an undetermined electrical malfunction in the floor of the attic above the second-floor ceiling, he said.

There were no injuries, but five people were displaced by the fire, he said. They were being helped by the Red Cross.

The second floor and attic suffered fire, smoke and water damage, while the first floor has smoke and water damage, he said.
