Through Katie Gardner’s application to NASA’s 'Moon Tree' program, a sweet gum tree that orbited the moon twice as a seedling is setting down roots on the New Milford High School campus. Gardner, a science teacher at New Milford High School for 21 years, expressed excitement about the tree's potential to provide generations of enjoyment.NASA's Selection Process
Gardner's application was one of over 1,300 submissions received by NASA for a 'Moon Tree' seedling that spent 25 days in space on the Artemis I mission. Organizations selected for a 'Moon Tree' are evaluated based on their ability to care for the tree species and maximize educational opportunities surrounding the tree's life and growth in their communities.Zero Gravity Experiment
NASA had five different tree species on the unmanned flight, germinated by the Forest Service at Nebraska National Forests. The initiative aims to study how zero gravity affects seeds.Future Seedling Shipments
A total of 148 'Moon Tree' seedlings were shipped this spring, with more planned for fall 2025. Three communities in Connecticut have already received seedlings.Gardner's Application Journey
Gardner learned about the opportunity in August and collaborated with the school's science department on a detailed application. She emphasized tying the 'Moon Tree' to the school's curriculum and community involvement.Exciting News for New Milford
In April, NASA announced the shipment of seedlings to institutions across the U.S., with New Milford High School and an elementary school in New Canaan among the recipients. The sweet gum tree arrived in mid-May and was officially planted on the school's grounds on June 5.Tree Care and Community Involvement
To ensure the tree's health, measures such as temporary fencing to deter wildlife and regular watering have been implemented. A placard will be installed to educate visitors about the tree's history and create a space for contemplation of nature and space. The 'Moon Tree' serves as a symbol of scientific exploration and educational inspiration for the community.
