From Idu Jude, Abuja

Ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states, the civil society organization (CSO) The Electoral Hub has urged political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to work towards ensuring a credible electoral process.

In a statement issued by Princess Hamman-Obels, Director of The Electoral Hub, the organization emphasized the importance of collective action for successful elections, particularly from political parties and candidates. They highlighted that elections are a process, not just an event and that actions taken before, during, and after the contest are crucial for its success.

The statement expressed concern over irregularities witnessed during the primary elections held in both states, noting that these irregularities threaten inclusivity and internal democracy within party structures. They also pointed to a worrying trend of disregard for electoral rules and potential undermining of the process’s integrity.

“The Electoral Hub firmly believes that free, fair, and credible elections are essential for the sustenance of democracy and the stability of any nation,” the statement read. “As such, stakeholders, especially political parties and candidates, must take steps to avoid actions that undermine the credibility of the process.”

The organization urged political parties and candidates to conduct themselves according to the rule of law and democratic norms during the campaign period, emphasizing the need to prevent pre-election violence, hate speech, and inciting remarks.

They also called upon the electoral umpire to address the identified challenges and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a credible, peaceful, and transparent manner. Additionally, the statement highlighted the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to promote a peaceful and successful election.

“We reiterate that successful elections require collective action,” the statement concluded. “An election is a process, not an event. The actions and inactions preceding and after the contest are crucial determinants of its success or failure. It is, therefore, important for political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to begin acting now towards ensuring the integrity and credibility of the electoral process that the people of Edo and Ondo states will be proud to be associated with.”
