MARIPOSA, Calif. (KMPH) — Fire crews have started to slow down the French Fire in California.

Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said in a Facebook Live Saturday morning that they couldn't have stopped the fire from spreading this quickly without everyone's cooperation.

"This is a good feeling that we all come together and we call work together to make sure we do the best of the best for you," said Briese.

The fire, which started on the Fourth of July, has grown 908 acres. Cal Fire reports as of Saturday evening, the fire is 35% contained.

Burn scars are seen across hundreds of acres, with flames coming too close for comfort in residential areas.

"There's still active hot spots," said Briese. "There's still other hazards that occur in a fire area when a fire burns."

Briese said that even though many of the evacuations have been lifted, this doesn't mean people should rush in.

We're still having rocks come down and things like that," he said. "Just an ask, if you don't really need to be in the burn area, if we can try to keep that clear as much as possible.

According to Cal Fire, four homes have been destroyed, and four people, including three firefighters, have been hurt.

That's why Briese is asking the Mariposa community to trust in the firefighters who are looking after them.

When we ask you to leave for your safety, you know that we're going to be there 24 hours a day watching your homes, your property and doing everything we can to keep any criminals out that want to decide to victimize folks that just went through such a traumatic thing," he said.

While the fire still burns in steep terrain, firefighters are making every effort to ensure homeowners can sleep in their own beds.

"I think we did a really good job of the amount of time we had and the amount of time of getting people back home," said Briese.
