A jury convicted a 23-year-old admitted gang member on Monday, July 1, of partaking in the fatal shooting a Gardena man in front of his family home nearly four years ago.

Justin Arteaga, a.k.a. “Hitta,” of Gardena, was found guilty of one count of violent crime in aid of racketeering murder, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On November 13, 2020, Evan Campbell and his brother were in a parked car in front of their home along the 14400 block of Raymond Avenue when they were confronted by three men on foot, including Arteaga; Antonio Yanez, 26, a.k.a. “Tank;” and George Hernandez, a.k.a. “Lil Vampy.”

The men were members of the Gardena 13 street gang, which authorities alleged operates in several states under the control of the Mexican Mafia.

They demanded to know where the two brothers were from and claimed the brothers were in the gang’s territory, prosecutors said. Campbell stepped out of the car during the confrontation and one of the men swung at him moments before all three men pulled out guns and shot at him.

He was hit 10 times and died in the street, prosecutors said.

Campbell’s father heard the gunshots and came out from the home with a firearm and exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects, according to the U.S Attorney’s Office. George Hernandez, 33, was struck in the head and chest and died at the hospital a week later.

A fourth man, Jesus Hernandez — George’s brother — did not join the three others in confronting the victims but ran toward the shots to defend three and fired at least one shot at the victim’s father, court documents show.

Yanez and Jesus Hernandez were arrested the night of the shooting.

Yanez pleaded guilty in February 2022 to violent crime in aid of racketeering, using and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is set to be sentenced in the coming months.

Jesus Hernandez pleaded guilty in May 2022 to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and is serving a nine year prison sentence.

Arteaga was arrested four days after the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport where he was booked on a flight to Mexico.

He is scheduled to appear back in court for sentencing in September and faces a possible sentence of life in federal prison.
