Some unidentified assailants allegedly killed a maize farmer named Ogar Fidelis at his farm in the Odomosibi area of Ijebu-Igbo on Saturday.

This incident occurred just two weeks after a rice farmer named Taiwo Paul was reportedly murdered by suspected herders in the Kata area of Ewekoro Local Government Area.

The victim was discovered in a critical condition, lying in a pool of blood at his rice plantation, with severe cuts to his neck and right leg. His twin brother, Kehinde, found him groaning in pain before he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

However, the state police command through its spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, informed our correspondent that the two incidents were unrelated and that the perpetrators behind Saturday’s incident were yet unknown.

A source in the police command, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to a lack of authorisation, said Fidelis’ family grew worried when he did not return from his farm after leaving early Saturday morning.

When the family’s concerns peaked, PUNCH Metro learnt that a search party was dispatched to comb Fidelis’ farm and the surrounding area.

The search party, according to the police source, was shocked to find Fidelis’ lifeless body on the farm, with severe machete cuts on his neck and other parts of his body.

Meanwhile, the command’s spokesperson in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Sunday said the corpse had been taken to the hospital for autopsy and noted that the investigation was still ongoing.

She said, “We are not suspecting anyone yet. We are investigating the matter. We will know the circumstances after the investigation is completed.

“In the meantime, the body has been deposited at the University Hospital in Ago-Iwoye mortuary for autopsy.”
