A man allegedly shot his wife and mother-in-law in the head in Kentucky, telling investigators he “had a job to take both females out.”

Michael Hunt, 32, faces murder charges in the shootings of his wife, Emily Hunt, 33, and her mother, Beth Simmons, 56.

The bloodshed happened on Friday. Shelby County Sherriff’s Office deputies received a call of a possible shooting at 8:40 p.m. in rural Pleasureville, Kentucky, authorities said in a news release. The area is just over 40 miles east of Louisville. Deputies found Beth Simmons dead and her daughter with life-threatening injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she died the following afternoon.

Hunt was arrested Saturday night, allegedly admitting to shooting both women, saying he “had a job to take both females out,” local Fox affiliate WDRB reported, citing an arrest citation.

Neighbors were shocked.

“I heard the shots,” Rita Stout told local CBS affiliate WLKY. “There was like six bangs that went off. I thought it was the kids with the fireworks.”

Her granddaughter Areyanna Brown told the station they live in a rural area, so it’s not uncommon to hear gunshots.

“We’re kind of like in the country, so it’s not weird to hear people shoot their gun,” she said.

Stout told the station she left the suburbs for the peace of a rural area.

“We moved out in the country, we thought, you know, to get away from stuff like that,” she told the network. “We lived in a subdivision, and now it’s this.”

Capt. Blake Lisby with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told WDRB that the Simmons family is “very well known in the community, as far as I know, lifelong residents, very active in the community and the community’s definitely shaken at this point.”

In a statement, the family asked for privacy, local ABC affiliate WHAS reported.

“We are grateful for the love and support that we have received from the community during this difficult time and ask for continued privacy,” the statement said. “Once funeral arrangements have been made, a public service will be held to celebrate Beth and Emily.”

The family is raising money for funeral services for the victims on GoFundMe.

Hunt is being held at the Shelby County Detention Center, online booking records show.
