The Boys continues to pride itself on a penchant for social commentary mixed with its constantly over-the-top humor. However, given the many real-world issues today, showrunner Eric Kripke expresses concern that the series is closely mirroring society's ills.

Speaking with The Wrap, Kripke discussed The Boys and its uncanny ability to predict real-life events, admitting he's "really troubled" by this growing trend. The latest example of this trend was Season 4 debuting shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts following his hush money trial involving adult film star Stormy Daniels. “This show has an increasingly disturbing track record of reflecting reality one way or another,” Kripke said. “There’s some throwaway dialogue, for example, in that billionaires are talking about how they have to stack the Supreme Court to get the decisions that they need. I’m not happy being Satan’s writers' room. I’m starting to get really troubled by it. But there does continue to be a certain eerie similarity between the show and the things that are happening in the real world.”

Eric Kripke talks about what Billy Butcher learned on The Boys and how it ties into the idea of Butcher having an "angel and devil on his shoulders."

Meanwhile, in the newly-released Season 4, Episode 6, "Dirty Business,"Homelander (Antony Starr) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) hatch a diabolical plan to kill the recently elected president Robert Singer (Jim Beaver) and install his vice president, Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), in a White House coup. "Dirty Business" debuted on America's Independence Day (Jul. 4), potentially stirring up some memories of the infamous Capitol building takeover led by Trump supporters. “It was not necessarily built to land on the Fourth of July," Kripke said. "We didn’t know what Amazon was going to do with air dates until really just a couple of months ago, right before they announced the premiere. I only know about a week or two before everybody else knows. And then we knew it would land on the Fourth of July.”

Eric Kripke Says 'Woke' Critics Need to Watch Another TV Series

Though Kripke voiced his concerns about The Boys' parallels with societal events, he has never apologized for his show's political commentary. Kripke recently blasted fans complaining about the show's "woke" nature and mirroring social issues, telling The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the Season 4 premiere "Anyone who wants to call the show 'woke' or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else. But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologize for what we’re doing."

Though critics have been raving about The Boys Season 4, fans have seemingly taken Kripke's comments and the show's increased take on social problems to heart. After being highly rated by fans the previous three seasons, Season 4 boasts easily the lowest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes throughout its run (53%), with the show becoming a victim of review bombing, though Kripke doesn't mind it.

Prime Video recently renewed The Boys for a fifth season ahead of Season 4's debut. Kripke subsequently confirmed Season 5 would mark the end of the award-winning series.

The Boys Season 4 is now airing on Prime Video.
