1918: A provisional government opposed to the Bolsheviks establishes itself at Vladivostok, the Russia port on the Sea of Japan.
1932: The USSR and China sign a non-aggression treaty.
1933: Italian boxer Primo Carnera KOs American defending champion Jack Sharkey in round 6 at Madison Square Garden to become only the third European to win the lineal world heavyweight title. On the same day, actor Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle dies aged 46 from a heart attack just hours after signing a contract which would have resurrected his career.
1934: Henry Cotton wins the British Open golf tournament.
1940: George M Cohan is the first artist to be presented with a US Congressional Gold Medal, by Franklin D. Roosevelt (for raising war morale). On the same day, Robin the boy wonder makes his first appearance in the DC comic Batman. On the same day, artist Paul Klee dies aged 60.
1949: South Africa begins implementing apartheid.
1950: The part-timers of the United States beat England 1-0 in a World Cup match in Brazil with accountancy student and part-time dishwasher Joe Gaetjens scoring the decisive goal.
1954: The US Atomic Energy Commission votes against reinstating Dr Robert Oppenheimer.
1956: Marilyn Monroe marries playwright Arthur Miller in New York.

1967: Keith Richards is found guilty of allowing his house to be used for the illegal smoking of cannabis and is sentenced to one year in jail and a £500 fine, Mick Jagger is fined £100 and sentenced to three months in jail on drug charges. On the same day, film star Jayne Mansfield dies in a car crash. Three of her children, including future star of Law and Order Special Victims Unit, Marishka Hargitay, suffer minor injuries.
1968: A free concert is held in Hyde Park, London, with Pink Floyd, Roy Harper, Jethro Tull and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
1969: Soul singer Shorty Long drowns aged 29 when his boat capsizes on the Detroit River in Michigan.
1974: Isabel Peron is sworn in as interim leader of the Argentine Republic after her husband Juan Peron falls ill. On the same day, the military stage a coup in Ethiopia.
1975: Singer-songwriter Tim Buckley dies of a heroin and morphine overdose aged 28.
1976: The Seychelles become independent from the UK.
1979: Little Feat singer/songwriter/guitarist Lowell George dies aged 34 of a heart attack in an Arlington, Virginia hotel room.
1981: Hu Yaobang becomes chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
1985: John Lennon’s 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, with psychedelic paintwork, sells for a record sum of $3,006,385, (£1,768,462) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.
1986: Richard Branson smashes the world record for the fastest powerboat crossing of the Atlantic in Virgin Challenger II. On the same day, Argentina beat West Germany, 3-2 to win the World Cup in Mexico.
1988: Brenda Richie, wife of Lionel Richie is arrested in Beverly Hills, California, after allegedly hitting the singer and a young woman when she found them in bed together.
1992: Algerian head of state, Mohamed Boudiaf, is assassinated by military officers during a public speech at the opening of a cultural centre in Annaba.
1995: A fire breaks out in the main stand of Doncaster Rovers’ Belle Vue ground and around £100,000 of damage is caused to the seating and roof. Four years later Ken Richardson, who was the owner of the club at the time, was convicted of organizing the blaze and was sentenced to four years in jail for conspiracy to commit arson. On the same day, the US shuttle Atlantis successfully docks with the Russian Mir space station in orbit. Also, film star Lana Turner dies aged 75.
1998: England lose on penalties (again) – this time to Argentina in a Word Cup last 16 match which saw David Beckham sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone after the Argentine had fouled him.
1999: Michael Jackson suffers severe bruising after falling over 50 feet when a bridge collapses during a concert at Munich’s Olympic stadium.
2000: Eminem’s mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, goes to court claiming defamation of character in a $10 million civil suit, after taking exception to the line “My mother smokes more dope than I do” from her son’s hit My Name Is.
2001: The government announces a memorial fountain in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales, is to be built in London’s Hyde Park.
2002: Singer and actress Rosemary Clooney dies of lung cancer aged 74.
2003: Death of actress Katharine Hepburn aged 96.
