Ghanaian winger Elvis Amoh proved to be the hero for Detroit City FC as they secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL Championship.

The match, held at Keyworth Stadium, saw Tampa Bay dominating possession and creating more chances.

Before the game, the head-to-head record favored Tampa Bay Rowdies with three wins to Detroit City FC’s one. However, the introduction of Amoh in the 67th minute changed the complexion of the game. Replacing Rhys Williams, Amoh’s impact was immediate and decisive.

The turning point came in the 59th minute when Detroit City FC’s Abdoulaye Diop received a second yellow card, leaving his team a man down. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Detroit City FC rallied and found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Amoh, assisted by American-born Ghanaian defender Devon Amoo-Mensah, headed home from the center of the box to level the scores.

Just when it seemed Detroit City FC would hold on for a draw, Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Nick Moon scored in the dying moments of the game. However, the goal was disallowed, securing a vital point for Detroit City FC.

Amoh, 32, has been a key player for Detroit City FC this season, featuring in nine games, scoring three goals, and providing two assists in the 2024 USL Championship.

Detroit City FC will look to build on this result when they face Memphis 901 FC in their next league game.
