Nestled along the serene shores of the historic Erie Canal on Rochester’s west side, lies a 55-acre retreat known as Homesteads for Hope Community Farm. A Visionary Pursuit: This exceptional sanctuary, where individuals of all capabilities can learn, work, and reside harmoniously, is the brainchild of Jennyrae Brongo, an entrepreneurial luminary and fervent champion for those with disabilities. The farm epitomizes her commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as she turns personal obstacles into a crusade of hope and empowerment. The Journey Unveiled: Following her graduation from Spencerport High School in 2007 and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management Engineering from Alfred State College in 2011, Brongo joined her father's construction firm. Tragically, her father passed away shortly after, leaving Jennyrae to lead the family business. She revitalized their 15-acre gravel pit into Brongo Supply, concentrating on construction recycling and landscape supply. Although successful, her heart yearned for a different cause: enhancing the lives of her family and other parents caring for children with disabilities. Seeding Hope: The genesis of Homesteads for Hope germinated during a moment of despair interlaced with hope. Jennyrae is the full-time guardian of her brother, Charles “Chucky” Brongo, who has autism. Faced with the challenge of finding suitable services for Chucky post-graduation, Jennyrae and her mother, Luann, dedicated endless hours in search of solutions. A visit to a neighboring farm sparked an epiphany that would alter their destinies. Inspired by the therapeutic potential of nature and community, they envisioned a haven where individuals with disabilities could discover purpose and a sense of belonging. Jennyrae and Luann established Homesteads for Hope in 2013 to establish a fully inclusive campus offering educational and vocational programs on a public farm. Cultivating Community: Homesteads for Hope transcends being merely a farm; it is a community where individuals progress collectively. Under Jennyrae’s stewardship, the farm has blossomed into a dynamic hub that caters to over 600 families. Offering an array of programs, from vocational training to social interaction and skill enhancement, all meticulously crafted to empower individuals with disabilities. The unwavering support of the community has been pivotal in this odyssey, metamorphosing the farm into a beacon of inclusivity and opportunity. At Homesteads for Hope, “individuals with and without disabilities thrive, finding purpose and belonging through the transformative power of agriculture.” Elevating Lives: The impact of the farm is profound. With 17 staff members, over 30 volunteers, and 65 full-time apprentices, Homesteads for Hope acts as a lifeline for families navigating the complexities of raising children with disabilities. The programs extended at the farm aid individuals in transitioning from childhood to adulthood, nurturing independence and confidence through hands-on education and community participation. A Beacon of Hope: One of Brongo’s most exultant accomplishments is the inauguration of the Forever Homestead, a 6,500-square-foot community center housed in a refurbished 200-year-old estate. This venture, finalized just before the grand opening in October 2023, encompasses classrooms, a culinary teaching facility, administrative offices, and residential quarters, serving as the nucleus of the community. The inauguration of the center underlined the potency of hope and community, welcoming over 1,000 guests and marking a significant milestone in Homesteads for Hope’s path. A Vision Unfolds: Brongo’s vision for Homesteads for Hope continues to transcend. Her immediate objective for 2024 is to bridge the financial gap in a $2.5 million fundraising campaign, aimed at safeguarding the farm’s future and bolstering the establishment of inclusive residential accommodations on the property. This ambitious endeavor seeks to furnish essential living spaces for individuals with disabilities, further enriching the farm’s mission of inclusion and empowerment. She underscores her personal aspiration “to ensure my brother and our farm family have everything they need, and then maybe [she’ll] consider slowing down a bit.” A Labor of Love: Brongo is intricately involved in every facet of the organization, from strategic planning and community engagement to program expansion and hands-on farm labor. She extends gratitude to all individuals contributing to the farm’s operations and endorsing its cause. A Legacy of Love: Homesteads for Hope stands as a monument to Brongo’s vision, furnishing a model of inclusivity and empowerment that metamorphoses lives and instills hope. As the farm burgeons, so does the legacy of love and community that Brongo and her family have nurtured, underscoring that with tenacity and a shared vision, anything is achievable.
