The American outlanded and outclassed his rival Conceicao who seemed confined to the fact he had come up short in his world title ambitions.

But stunningly, the judges' were split on their decision and handed the challenger a hugely controversial win.

The scorecards saw Foster handed a fair 116-112 decision, while the two other officials surprisingly scored the contest at 116-112, 115-113 in the challenger's favour.

After the bell, the champion who had lost his crown was close to tears and was clearly distraught with the controversial decision.

He fumed in his post-fight interview and simply couldn't understand how he had been denied another title defence.

Foster said after the final bell: "I thought it was a shutout. I thought it was an easy fight.

"I didn't get touched but with a headbutt. I don't know, man. They stole this fight from me."

It was a view that the boxing world shared as fans were left angered and confused by the verdict.

But one final fan attempted to explain the decision, concluding: "I scored it for Foster, but not nearly as wide as some.

"Foster had a low work rate the entire evening, and allowed an opponent he should have outclassed easily to hang around.

"That’s where good things often don’t happen."

The punch stats reflected his dominance, outlanding his rival by 109 punches to 76 across the twelve rounds.

Foster could well appeal or search for immediate redemption against his rival, who has certainly fell on his feet.
