On the first day after his victory in Iran’s 14th presidential election, Masoud Pezeshkian visited Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum south of Tehran on Saturday.

After laying a wreath on the tomb of Imam Khomeini and reciting prayers, he delivered a speech in which he thanked Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei for paving the way for greater popular participation in the electoral process and appreciated the Iranian people’s enthusiastic participation in the election.

He also stressed his commitment to fulfilling the pledges he made during the election campaign.

Pezeshkian referred to the Ashura uprising and said one of the main reasons for what happened in Karbala was that some people gave promises but failed to fulfil them.

The significance of Al-Wafa bil-Ahd (fulfilling one's promises) is one of the lessons of the Ashura uprising, he added.

He also said he would seek to advance dialogue, convergence, and national consensus, and vowed to address the country’s problems in all economic, social, cultural, and political areas.

Pezeshkian secured the majority of votes in the election runoff on Friday, becoming the ninth Iranian president.

With a total of 30,530,157 votes counted, Pezeshkian secured a strong lead with 16,384,403 votes, while Jalili received 13,538,179 votes.

Over 61 million Iranians were eligible to vote this Friday. The vote count started right after the polling ended, concluding a 16-hour voting period that recorded a voter turnout of 49.7 percent, which was notably higher than the turnout for the June 28 election.
