Lagos State Domestic Violence Agency reacts after Muslim businessman admitted to beating his wife because she objected to him taking a second wife

The Lagos State Domestic Violence Agency has reacted after a Muslim man admitted on X to beating his wife because she tried to stop him from exercising his "Islamic right to pick a second wife".

Sir Jarus, a businessman who is popular on X, was called out after it emerged that he abused his current wife because he was in the process of taking a new wife.

This first wife has been married to him for 14 years and they have three children together.

Reacting, Jarus admitted he beat his wife but said it was because she gave him trouble and visited a "Cele Woli" when he told her he was about to remarry (read here).

Reacting, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said abuse is not tolerated in the state and they are looking into the case.

They wrote on X: "Our attention has been drawn to a tweet made by @SirJarus.

"As the Statutory Agency in Lagos State dedicated to preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence, we take this very seriously.

"Domestic violence in any form is unacceptable, and the Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against it.

"We have, as an Agency referred this to the Commissioner of Police (Gender Desk Department) to ensure that investigation commences.

"We appreciate everyone who tagged us and brought this to our attention.

"We remain accessible 24/7 via our toll-free line at 08000-333-333."
