In a surprising turn of events, more than fifty leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ehime Mbano chapter have announced their departure from the party. Instead, they have pledged their support to the former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.
During a gathering at Summit Hotels in Owerri on Tuesday, Dr. Professor Darlington Akukwu, a prominent figure within the PDP ranks, expressed gratitude to the members for their unwavering commitment to their former party. He lamented the perceived decline in fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness within the PDP since Ihedioha’s departure.
“Under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, our party was known for its integrity and openness,” remarked Professor Akukwu, who also served as the former Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Imo State. He highlighted Ihedioha’s brief but impactful tenure as governor, emphasizing his achievements despite a short stint in office.
Hon. Mrs. Vivian Echeruo echoed similar sentiments, commending Professor Akukwu for organizing the gathering and underscoring his role as a steadfast leader who has consistently included others in decision-making processes.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cyril Ejimkonye, a former Vice Chairman of the PDP, disclosed his personal decision to follow Emeka Ihedioha, asserting that wherever Ihedioha leads, he and his supporters will follow.
Other former PDP officials and stakeholders present, including Hon. Mbaegbu Aloysius, Hon. Nick Obilor, and Elder Nwobodo Anyanwu, expressed their admiration for Professor Akukwu’s leadership and vision, aligning themselves with the move to join Ihedioha’s “Rebuild Imo” initiative.
“In Ehime Mbano, PDP is now defunct,” declared Mr. Ejimkonye, reflecting the group’s collective decision to leave the party and throw their support behind Ihedioha.
The stakeholders urged their colleagues to spread the word about their departure from PDP and their newfound allegiance to Emeka Ihedioha, signaling a significant shift in political alliances within Imo State.
