NEC Victory: Wike's Camp Intensifies Plot To Keep Damagun As PDP Chairman Till 2025 As Atiku's Camp Fights Back

The battle for the soul of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between the pro-Atiku and pro-Wike camps appears to be just beginning, despite the recent decision of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to retain Ambassador Umar Ilya Damagum as Acting National Chairman until at least August or September.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, one party source who craved anonymity said, “The real test of strength between the two sides will come up over the next few months when the party is scheduled to conduct its congresses in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

These congresses will produce leaders who will play a significant role in the party’s national convention, expected to take place towards the end of next year, and in other pre-2027 election activities.

The constitution of caretaker committees for the party in some states is causing controversy, particularly in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara protested against his state’s list, claiming it favored the Wike camp.

The Wike camp is reportedly keen on keeping Damagum in office as Chairman beyond August and eventually assuming the position of substantive national chairman. However, this depends largely on the outcome of the forthcoming ward, local government, and state congresses.

A party source stated, “The leadership change will see a North Central party member taking Damagum’s position of Deputy National Chairman (North) while Damagum becomes Chairman.”

Damagum, emerging from the NEC meeting on Thursday, expressed his lack of concern about the tension preceding the deliberation, stating, “This was not a matter of life and death.”
