On Saturday, June 29, Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, criticized Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, alleging that Obi had never spoken out for security personnel killed in the South-East by unknown gunmen, suspected to be IPOB members. Omokri, who has around 2.5 million followers on social media platform X, made these remarks while condemning Obi’s call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained IPOB leader.

In response to Obi’s statement advocating dialogue over incarceration for agitators, Omokri accused Obi of showing allegiance to IPOB leadership. He emphasized that Obi had not publicly addressed the deaths of over a hundred military and paramilitary personnel allegedly killed by IPOB-associated gunmen, yet supported Kanu’s release.

Omokri further urged security personnel not to support Obi’s candidacy in the 2027 general election, questioning Obi’s stance on punishing those responsible for attacks on security agents. He highlighted a recent incident where gunmen killed five soldiers in Abia State, a tragedy Obi had condemned as a “dastardly act” and called for justice.

In a statement on social media, Obi had expressed sorrow over the soldiers’ deaths, denouncing the worsening insecurity nationwide and calling for thorough investigation and apprehension of the attackers.
