Police arrested a man on multiple felony charges after seizing 17.5 grams of fentanyl and a handgun outside a north Austin game room.

Matthew Evans, 38, was apprehended on Tuesday, July 2, at approximately 3:40 p.m. near the intersection of I-35 and East Braker Lane, according to an Austin Police Department affidavit.

Officers from the department's North Metro Tactical Unit were conducting a patrol in the area due to increased narcotics activity. They recognized Evans leaving the game room and confirmed he had an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation, court document said.

Upon arrest, Evans informed officers he had narcotics and a firearm in his possession. A search yielded several plastic bags containing suspected fentanyl powder, counterfeit oxycodone pills, a Springfield Armory handgun, and drug paraphernalia including a digital scale and empty plastic bags.

The affidavit states the amount of fentanyl seized is 175 times that of an average user dose, leading officers to believe Evans intended to distribute the drug.

Evans faces charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and unlawful carrying of a firearm by a felon. He has a prior felony conviction for drug possession in Llano County from 2021.

The game room location is known to law enforcement as a high drug trafficking area, the affidavit noted.
