Muhammed Abubakar, a 26-year-old security guard, allegedly killed an unidentified man who he accused of trying to steal his phone. The incident occurred in the Ajaka area of Sagamu, where Abubakar was employed to guard a building.

According to sources, the fatal encounter took place on Monday night. The victim succumbed to his injuries around 9 p.m. at a local hospital in Sagamu. Witnesses reported that Abubakar struck the man on the head with a large plank, causing a severe injury.

Residents became concerned after hearing a loud noise from Abubakar’s post and reported it to the Sagamu Police Division. Inspector Ojo Alasofe was dispatched to investigate. Upon arrival, they found the victim in critical condition, lying in a pool of blood with Abubakar standing nearby.

Abubakar claimed that the victim had snatched his phone, prompting him to chase and apprehend the alleged thief with the help of another security guard. During the altercation, Abubakar struck the victim on the head with a stick, resulting in a fatal injury.

Passersby, alerted by the victim’s screams, called the police. Despite being rushed to Live Well Hospital, the victim was declared dead on arrival. His body was subsequently taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital for identification.

The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Abubakar fled the scene after realizing the victim had died. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.

This incident echoes a similar case from September 2023, when two security guards in the Sango-Ota area of the state were arrested for allegedly shooting a man in the eye during an altercation. The man had confronted the guards for not being at their post, leading to the fatal shooting.

Authorities are urging the public to report any information regarding Abubakar’s whereabouts as the investigation continues.
